This is a category with all control problems that seek for energy-optimal solutions, e.g., reaching a certain goal or completing a certain process with a minimum amount of energy. The objective function is of Lagrange type and sometimes proportional to a minimization of the squared control (e.g., acceleration) $u(\cdot)$, e.g.,

$\Phi[\cdot] = \int_{t_0}^{t_f} u^2 \; \mathrm{d} t.$

Almost always an upper bound on the free end time $t_f$ needs to be specified.
